Restaurant website visits are high-intent. People who visit your website are often already interested - they found you on Google, saw you on Instagram, or got a recommendation. The website's job is to close that interest into a reservation or a visit.
Most restaurant websites fail at this because they're built to look impressive rather than to convert.
The Five Things Every Restaurant Website Must Do
1. Load fast on mobile Over 80% of restaurant website visits are on mobile. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, you're losing the majority of your visitors before they see anything. Speed is not optional.
2. Show the menu - completely and accurately The menu is the most-visited page on most restaurant websites. It needs to be current, formatted for mobile reading (not a PDF), and include prices. A PDF menu that requires downloading is a conversion killer.
3. Make reservations or orders easy The reservation or order button should be visible on every page without scrolling. If you use OpenTable, Resy, or an online ordering platform, embed it directly - don't just link to an external site.
4. Show the atmosphere honestly Customers want to know what kind of experience they're booking. Real photos of the actual space, the actual food, and actual guests (with permission) convert better than professional food photography alone.
5. Be findable locally "Best Italian restaurant Edmonton" or "sushi near Sherwood Park" - your site needs to rank for relevant local search terms. This requires Google Business Profile optimization, local schema markup, and consistent NAP data.
What Not to Do
- Full-page loading animations: Every second of wait time costs visitors
- Music that autoplays: Universally despised, instantly closes browsers
- Flash or non-standard navigation: Users don't figure it out - they leave
- Outdated hours or menu: Nothing destroys trust faster than showing up to find closed doors
